I am honored to deliver the Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture this morning. I can think of no group I feel more comfortable with than those who believe so deeply in reaching out into our communities to help those who cannot read, who do not use our libraries every day.
Written for a library-based class to improve English language skills in the context of learning about health, this can be used in ESOL classes as well. There are beginning and intermediate curricula, each containing 20 units with lesson plans, worksheets and mp3s. These are suitable for varying levels and a variety of learning types. The lessons are participatory and use a variety of teaching styles, including listening activities for most of the lessons.
Classes on health, language, and more for all ages; college prep; and educational tools for parents or guardians and children. Take free classes on job skills, health, fitness, cooking, and using the computer. Other programs from Queens Libraries include classes for kids and parents, language classes, crafts and games, and homework help.
The Center provides resources to adult learners in various capacities. We maintain an extensive collection of print and electronic media resources. We also have a variety of web-based distant learning resources and Multimedia materials to help adult immigrants learn English, and adult new readers navigate the community.
